THE USE OF DIACRITIC MARK IN ACHEHNESE LANGUAGE

By Hasbi Yusuf

A number of diacritical marks used to clarify and emphasize the writing and pronunciation of words in the Achehnese language are as follows:

1. aigu  /é/,

2. grave  /è/,

3. Diaeresis /ë/

4. makron  /ô/,

5. trema  /ö/, dan

6. apostrof  / ’/.

Example:

1. Aigu /é/

        - ék = up

        - kéh = pocket

        - kréh = dagger

        - padé = paddy.

2.   Grave /è/

        - èk = dung

        - keh = match

        - krèh = testicles

        - lalè = negligent.

3.    Diaeresis /ë/

        - ië = water,

        - biëng = (crab),

        - sië = meat, slaughter.

4.    Makron /ô/

        - ôn = leaf

        - lhôh = highlight, shine

        - peurahô = boat.

5.   Trema /ö/

        - öt = decrease

        - lhöh = unload

        - seungkö=catfish.

6.  Apostrof / '/

        - 'uet= swallow

        - h'iem= puzzle

        - ch'o = nasal.

Very easy and simple, right? So that communication with the Achehnese language in our society can take place clearly and firmly and there is no misinterpretation between communication partners, it is suggested to use the diacritical marks that we have described above.

For beginners or for those who don't yet speak Achehnese fluently, "good luck and good luck practicing, hopefully it's useful"!
